Last year I was looking to register my trademark name on some of the products I had designed, but I didn’t know where to start. Initially, I thought it would simply involve filling out a form and waiting for the answer, but as I later discovered, there was a lot more to it than that.

I didn’t know anyone else who tried to get a trademark for their products or services, so I wasn’t able to ask a layperson for advice, this meant I had to take a look elsewhere.

After searching online for a few minutes I came across a firm who looked like they would be able to help me get the Australian trademark name that I wanted. As I designed the products myself, I wanted to start off with a trademark in this country, before thinking about trademarks elsewhere. I didn’t know how well my products would sell, so it would have been a bit foolish to assume they would sell in New Zealand and beyond.

Fortunately I was able to find this firm, and they were more than happy to talk about their experience and background in the world of trademarks. There are quite a few firms out there who are more than happy to help you get a trademark, but I wanted to get the help of a firm who I could trust. This is why after a ten minute internet search, I thought I should keep looking. All the firms I came across seemed to be fairly new, or they charged some extortionate prices. I was looking for a trustworthy firm who wouldn’t break the bank, but who would also work hard to ensure I was able to register trademark names without much difficulty.

Although some newer firms may indeed do a really great job, for my own peace of mind, I wanted to use the services of a firm that had a proven track record.

A Long Trademark Process:

As soon as I hired someone from Macmillan Trademarks, I was made aware of all the procedures and formalities they would have to go through in order to give me what I wanted. They also made me aware the process could take about 6 or 7 months if all went according to plan; if things didn’t go according to plan, it could take a year, if not longer.

At this stage I was so pleased I’d decided to hire someone who knew what they were doing, because it all seemed like a lot of hard work

The process took on average about nine months per trademark after a few problems were highlighted, but I’m very happy with the whole process. I now have four trademarked products that are selling quite well in Australia, and I can now think about getting these products trademarks so I can sell them in other countries too.

While the whole process may take some time, it’s worth it in the end. If you want to protect your products by getting a trademark, make sure you speak to Macmillan Trademarks. So click here to learn more about getting your Australian Trademark.
